Inaugural BSidesDC Crypt Kids Con

BSidesDC 2015

Presented by:
Date: Saturday October 17, 2015
Time: 10:00 - 18:00
Location: Salon 3
Track: Crypt Kids

The Crypt Kids area will be divided into six "villages":

LOCKPICKING Have you ever wanted to learn how to pick a lock? If so, come learn from Toool! The mission of the Open Organization Of Lockpickers is to advance the general public knowledge about locks and lockpicking. By examining locks, safes, and other such hardware and by publicly discussing our findings we hope to strip away the mystery with which so many of these products are imbued. The more that people know about lock technology, the better they are capable of understanding how and where certain weaknesses are present. This makes them well-equipped to participate in sportpicking endeavors and also helps them simply be better consumers in the marketplace, making decisions based on sound fact and research.

WIRELESS CAPTURE THE FLAG The Wireless Village is a group of experts in the areas of Information, Wifi, and Radio Frequency Security with the common purpose to teach the exploration of these technologies with a focus on security. They focus on teaching classes on Wifi and Software Defined Radio, presenting guest speakers and panels, and providing the very best in Wireless Capture the Flag games to promote learning. We are incredibly excited that they have agreed to host a special edition of their CTF for the kids this year. This will be geared towards kids who want to learn but can also be enjoyed by those with some experience. We will have more info on what gear you will want to bring shortly if you want to participate!

DESTRUCTION VILLAGE Ever wonder what the inside of a laptop looks like? Want to take apart the television remote control but afraid your mom will yell at you? Then this village is for you! We will have donated electronics and equipment for you to take apart and examine! Special thanks to iFixit for the donation of tool kits for this village!

INTERNET OF THINGS VILLAGE From those that brought you the Internet of Things Village at DEFCON 23, a special kids edition of the village! There will be cool demos and opportunities to learn more about the IOT devices you use and how to stay safe.

GAMING VILLAGE Wanna teach your kid to be a hacker but don't know where to start? Security is a fairly complex topic but games offer the best way for kids to learn the basics. This village and presentation not only review a sample of existing games that teach security fundamentals to a younger audience but it will also discuss a new crowdsourced project to catalog similar fun and entertaining ways to teach kids security. This project could help spur interest in later university and other programs and potentially a career... or at least make our children a more security-conscience adult in whatever field they choose. Guest speaker Grecs and his son, pupstrr, will bring many of these games to share and kids will have the opportunity to play them!

CRYPTO VILLAGE This talk and village is meant to introduce the younger attendees of the conference to the world of cryptography and cryptanalysis by using examples in young adult literature, television, and of course materials from the three letter agency everyone loves to hate. If you have always wanted to participate in a crypto challenge or just get better at solving puzzles, this is going to be fun for you! Everyone needs to start somewhere so our speaker, Andrew Shumate, will begin with teaching kids to recognize different cypher and encoding systems. Once someone has a basic understanding of the basic systems used as well as where to find resources solving these challenges becomes easier. The goal is to expose the younger attendees of the conference to these systems and potentially spark an interest recognizing problems and puzzles and a desire to solve them. This will give them a foundation on which they can build other skills and then they can test what they learn by participating in the kids crypto challenge!
