The 2015 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC) is a college level competition aimed at providing undergraduate and graduate students with a real world cyber security experience. Students (the Blue Team) are given enterprise level network architectures (virtual and/or physical) and are expected to defend them against attackers (i.e. the Red Team), while maintaining services (such as e-commerce). The Red Team at NCCDC is made up of the best penetration testers in the United States. Ten Blue Teams are selected nationally from round-robin elimination style competitions, which take place all over the United States from January to April of each year (online qualifiers, state regionals, and then finally the national round). This talk will provide a brief overview on why students should aim to be on the CCDC team, how it is different from classes, and the unique opportunities that arise from it, with a brief mention of similar competitions.
