Panel Session: Developing Your Career in IT Security

The IT security industry continues to rapidly evolve. With this rate of change comes both opportunity and challenges. There are more areas of specialization and more types of employers to apply them to. Come to what will certainly be a spirited and exciting panel session on how very different segments of the industry are viewing the type of talent they want gain, train and retain. Whether you are looking for your first job, changing careers or an industry veteran looking for career development, this session is for you.

Brian Bourne – SecTor Co-Founder, will moderate the panel. Brian will also discuss how to best engage with the local IT security community.

Adrien de Beaupre – SANS Representative, will provide a perspective on continuing professional education and certifications.

Laura Payne – Senior Information Security Advisor at BMO, will provide the perspective of careers in large enterprise.

Mike Murray – VP Security Research at Lookout, will provide the perspective of working in research and product development. Mike has spent most of his career leading research and engineering teams.

4 to 5pm: Career Networking

Numerous community members, industry luminaries and vendors will be on hand to answer your questions and provide advice on building your IT career.

Adrien de Beaupre

Adrien de Beaupré is a certified SANS instructor and works as an independent consultant in beautiful Ottawa, Ontario. His work experience includes technical instruction, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, intrusion detection, incident response, and forensic analysis. He is a member of the SANS Internet Storm Center (isc.sans.edu). Adrien is actively involved with the information security community, and organizes the BSidesOttawa conference. When not geeking out and breaking stuff he can be found with his family, or at the dojo.

Brian Bourne

Brian has a passion for security and has been an active member of the IT security community for over 20 years. Being part of the IT community has always been important to Brian and his entrepreneurial spirit and industry experiences are what helped establish TASK and SecTor as part of Black Arts Illuminated. When he’s not running conferences and events, Brian maintains his technical edge as Executive Vice President, Products, New Signature, a Microsoft National Solution Provider headquartered in Washington DC. In June 2015, New Signature acquired Microsoft technology consultancy CMS Consulting and cloud management service Infrastructure Guardian, two businesses Brian founded. Brian also holds certifications including CISSP, MCITP, MCT and MVP status. When he’s not around a computer, you’ll find him out burning gasoline in a motorized vehicle, running a marathon or participating in a triathlon. Laura Payne

Laura Payne is a Senior Information Security Advisor at the Bank of Montreal. She has over 10 years of experience in the financial services industry covering a variety of roles in IT operations and information security. Laura holds a degree in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, volunteering in the community, and wilderness camping.

Mike Murray

Mike Murray is the VP of Security Research & Response at Lookout. For nearly two decades, Mike has focused on high-end security research, first as a researcher and penetration tester and then building and leading teams of highly skilled security professionals. He previously lead Product Development Security at GE Healthcare, where he spent the past couple of years building a global team to secure the Healthcare Internet of Things (from small hand-held ultrasound scanners to room size CT and MRI machines) and millions of medical records hosted in the cloud. Prior to that, he co-founded The Hacker Academy and MAD Security, and has held leadership positions at companies including nCircle Network Security, Liberty Mutual Insurance and Neohapsis.
